Research & Development

Through the skills and resources of our many talented people, we discover and develop new medicines that help improve the quality of life for patients around the world. We put patients first, and never forget that patients are waiting for our medicines.

In our Research & Development departments, we're working to discover and develop life-enhancing healthcare solutions for patients. It's an enormous undertaking, as you might imagine.

We focus our efforts on ten major therapeutic areas:

  • Neurosciences
  • Oncology
  • Infectious diseases
  • Ophthalmology
  • Biopharmaceuticals
  • Respiratory
  • Immunoinflammation
  • Metabolic pathways

Our culture

We aim to push the boundaries of traditional drug discovery and development, and are committed to finding new, more productive ways to develop medicines. That's why we use the latest automated scientific technologies to speed the early stages of drug discovery.

Our organizational structure also sets us apart. It allows us to take advantage of a large corporation's resources while, at the same time, operating with a small company ethos.

The drug discovery research teams promote an entrepreneurial way of working and encourage scientists to direct their course of research. Within our drug development area, small, therapeutically aligned units, called Medicine Development Centres, have full responsibility for Phase II to Phase IV clinical studies, helping improve our productivity and enabling us to create one of the best pipelines in the industry.

We believe it is our people who are our greatest asset. They come from all around the world, and include five Nobel Prize winning scientists. It's the diversity of their talent and skills that leads to the innovation and creativity necessary to discover and develop new medicines.
