GSK supports the “Nariz Vermelho” which is a programme involving clown doctors who visit hospitalised children in Portugal. The clown doctors are professional artists who are trained to adapt their work to the hospital environment. The 19 clown doctors carry out weekly visits reaching over 30,500 children annually in hospitals in Portugal, aiming to bring joy to hospitalised children.
The patients receive regular visits from the clown doctors, which have many positive effects not only on the children but also their families and staff. The laughter that follows the clown doctors is uplifting and their presence is stimulating. They use creative distraction techniques which are invaluable help to hospital staff. They also build relationships with families which supports them during their time and experiences in hospital.
This programme is continuously expanding and the number of patients visited is growing every year as well as the amount of clown doctors.
